Stories from 2009 Marathon Events

New Ulm Area Catholic Schools

Rain had been scarce in the New Ulm area the summer of 2009.  So when it was raining the day of the Marathon we tried not to complain.  Students in grades K – 8 attended a special Marathon Mass on the morning of Friday, September 25, thanking God for the rain and our many supporters.  Due to the rain the all school picnic in the park was moved to inside the dry cafeteria.  However, our hearty parent volunteers grilled hot dogs in the soft falling rain so the students could enjoy the flavor of a picnic lunch!

The official start to the NUACS Marathon for nonpublic education was 1:00 P.M.  Because of the wet weather we began in the HTMS gym with enthusiastic music and dancing led by physical education teachers Nancy Genelin and Becky Miller.  The rain plan was to walk through each of the schools including a trip through the underground tunnel.  However, when students emerged from the tunnel in the CHS building, they saw a break in the clouds.  Students and staff happily took an abbreviated outdoor marathon route.  As always the fresh air and exercise lifted everyone’s spirits.  Parents, grandparents and friends of NUACS showed support through pledges.  The student goal this year was $85 per students in grades K - 8, with the budgeted goal of $30,000.  Thanks to the generosity of parents and other supporters the students achieved their goal!  We also thank the Knights of Columbus who provided a special donation.  Congratulations to all involved for another successful fundraiser!

Our Lady of the Lake School, Mound

Our Lady of the Lake School raked over 24 lawns for people who could not do it themselves.  The theme for this year’s Rake-a-thon was “Survivor”.  Students participated in weekly challenges to build momentum.  Because they reached their goal, all students participated in a survivor day which included each of the eleven Rake-a-Thon teams participating in challenges such as the extreme pumpkin launcher.  There are videos of the challenges on our website at http://ourladyofthelake.com/school/parent-pages/events/rakeathon. 150 students raised $38,000! Below is a picture from the event.

St. John the Baptist, New Brighton

St. John the Baptist raised over $75,000!  They tried several new ideas to make their Marathon event successful this year. They created an FAQ sheet regarding the SJB Marathon that was very informative and helpful to both new and returning students and families. St. John’s had a very prominent presence at Roseville’s Central Park with 78% of the students in attendance between 8AM and 1PM.  This year they had the first Marathon Punch-card raffle for St. John’s.  After students walked/ran/biked around Bennett Lake they brought their punched-punch cards to the St. John’s shelter and SJB volunteers recorded the number of times they walked/ran/biked around the lake.   Students that completed a minimum of 1 lap around the lake then received a Dividend Punch Card Raffle ticket for a chance to win a separate Mystery Wallet.

The Knights helped make our Marathon a success and they made the event run smoothly. They did an excellent job organizing the event!  On the day of the Marathon, they made sure our shelter was ready with the doors to the bathrooms and kitchen open, they helped ensure safety of our walkers and bikers, and all enjoyed the free hotdogs, chips and drinks they provided during the day.
