Stories from 2006 Marathon Events

Divine Mercy Catholic School, Faribault, Minnesota

Divine Mercy Catholic School (DMCS - formerly Consolidated Catholic School) had a fantastic year bringing service into our marathon event for the first time. Students in 5th and 6th grade partnered with their Bethlehem Academy (BA) buddies in 7th and 8th grade to rake the leaves at a local public cemetery - Oak Ridge Cemetery. Our preschool students walked around the park and students in K - 4th grade walked through town, partnered with the BA buddies.

DMCS students earned the right to participate in the Royal Games to be held in late November by collecting pledges. Our top class will be our royal family, our top priest, our royal jester, our top two students in each class will be the Knights of the Round Table, and our principal, will be Queen Betty Thomes and will preside over the games. Our school earned over $33,000 for our 2006 marathon.

Duluth, Minnesota Catholic Schools

The five Catholic schools in Duluth and Proctor hosted their annual Marathon Community Service Project on October 6, 2006 in the neighborhoods surrounding their schools. Students, staff, and parents from each school participated by walking around their school community and cleaning up garbage and recyclable items.  Some students also participated in Beach Sweep and Adopt-a-Highway as part of this project. Once collected, all items were sorted and placed in the garbage or recycled accordingly. Students from each school gathered pledges of support for this community service project.  The pledge money collected will be used  to purchase learning tools such as computers and books. The five schools participating in this event were: St. Rose (Proctor); Holy Rosary, St. James, St. John’s and St. Michael’s (all of Duluth). Duluth Parks and Recreation Department supplied the plastic gloves and bags. Nordic Waste provided containers and services for the collection and disposal of the waste and recyclables we collect.

Christ the King Catholic School, Browerville, Minnesota

The students at Christ The King Catholic School raised $7261.32. A new school record and a little over $1000.00 more than last year.  A big accomplishment for a little school.  But they had a good reason to work so hard.  If they went over the school goal of $6000.00, the class that brought in the  most money (average per student) would turn Principal Mrs. Becker into a human sundae.  The 5th grade class had a ball of fun with whipped cream, marshmallows, caramel, chocolate, sprinkles, and even honey while the whole school, parents, and guests cheered them on!

Holy Family Academy, St. Louis Park, Minnesota

Over 90% of our growing student body participated in Marathon Day at Lake Cornelia in Edina.  Our all-school goal was surpassed by 10%.   Because our school boasts many large families, this year we added a prize to reward the siblings that raised the most money as a team .
